International Adoption Process

37529.jpeg

To adopt internationally the process is simple, yet the time frame before you get your animal can fluctuate. Once you have selected the animal you are interested in (which we can aid in, we know the amount of animals needing homes can be overwhelming, we can help narrow it down), the following steps occur;

  1. You submit your application

  2. The rescue will reach out to you to discuss the application

  3. If you are wanting a specific breed the rescue or myself can help you find what your looking for

  4. In some cases a virtual home check will occur

  5. You pay your adoption fee to the rescue, this includes; a fully vetted animal, unless there is a medical condition discussed up front. They are spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, bloodwork is completed, x-rays if necessary, nail trim and ear cleaning. They are also groomed before flying as the shelter setting can be quite dirty.

  6. You will be paying the cost of the flight for the animal to you

  7. Check-Ins will be conducted after adoption virtually to see how you and your new family member are doing.

  8. Options to get the dog from point A to B;

  • Fly to the location of the shelter and pick up your pet and accompany them home (BEST WAY)

  • The shelter can try and find a flight angel to accompany your pet home this could take some time as volunteers pay out of their pocket, you will still pay for the animals flight cost

  • If you want your pet quicker, you will pay for the pets airline fee and can pay a portion of the volunteers flight (shared with other adopters on that transport)

Have you been travelling and found a street dog or cat that has stolen your heart and you don't know what to do?

  1. If you can easily leash or capture the animal. Your first step should be finding a Veterinarian nearby (this will take asking around for recommendations)

  2. Get a health exam, see what your dealing with health wise. If the animal is not healthy enough to travel, it may be a case of finding a rescue to take the animal in and nurse it back to health before finding transport. Or it may be a case of an incurable disease, that does not allow the animal to travel (in this case I would still vet the animal and find a rescue or sanctuary to take the animal in).

  3. Check if you are able to fly animals from this country to Canada. Canada has VERY strict entry requirements. If the animal is coming from a HIGH RISK RABIES ZONE they will not be allowed into Canada.

  4. Vetting - General Exam, vaccines; DH2PP, Lepto, Rabies (RABIES NEEDED), bloodwork, spay/neuter, microchip, flea/tick treatment (start them right away - BRAVECTO is highly recommended), the animal may need dental work, orthopedic work, amputations, basic grooming. The prices will range dependent upon location. However I can guarantee, the prices where you find street dogs/cats are significantly lower than your home country, get what you can get done before transport.

  5. Contact your airline to discuss cargo or cabin space. You may need to reschedule your flights/flight path, or possibly the dates all together. Get quotes on fees for kennel.

  6. Certain countries require QUARANTINE PERIODS. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Quarantines can last anywhere from 0-4 months - sometimes longer if the paperwork and proper veterinary care has not been completed.

  7. Paperwork. VERY IMPORTANT. Every country has entry requirements and guidelines. DO YOUR RESEARCH. This is not an impossible task. You just have to look in the right place. Some places are much easier than others. RABIES VACCINE IS A MUST IN EVERY COUNTRY. Pet Passports, with vaccine stickers, proof, vet sign off on a healthy animal fit to fly. In most cases you will have to pay a entry customs fee for cats and dogs. If you are prepared, the process goes quite quickly.
