Why Spay and Neuter ?
An age old question with a very simple answer. The question that causes a debate no matter where you go. The answer, it saves lives. It alone can solve the homeless population in time. Thousands of animals find themselves unwanted, on the street or in shelters, every day.
Low Income Pet Care in British
If you are low-income or living on the streets there is a wonderful organization called the "Vets For Pets Foundation". The Importance of Sterilization.
-
A female pet has many more risks if left un-altered. Spaying helps prevent uterine infections (pyometras) and breast cancer (mammary tumors). Spaying your pet before their first heat offers the best protection from these diseases. Roughly 1 in 6 females will fall ill to pyometras - out of those - if caught fast enough - spaying gives them the best chance at survival. Without emergency surgery - 100% of cases will be fatal. This surgery is costly and high risk. IF YOU LOVE THEM, SPAY YOUR ANIMALS!
-
A male pet has just as many risks as a female when left un-altered. Besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer (canine testicular neoplasia) and other prostate issues. It can also help with their urge to roam.
-
Your spayed female won’t go into heat. While cycles can vary, female felines usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks during breeding season. In an effort to advertise for mates, they’ll yowl and urinate, sometimes all over your house!
-
Neutering a male can help with behavior issues. You still need to train your dog. However, this can help with aggression issues, and with animals marking their territories.
-
Spaying or neutering will not make your pet fat. Don’t use that old excuse! Lack of exercise and overfeeding will cause your pet to pack on the extra pounds — not neutering. Your pet will remain fit and trim as long as you continue to provide exercise and monitor food intake.
-
It is highly cost-effective. The cost of your pet’s spay/neuter surgery is a lot less than the cost of having and caring for a litter, or having a huge emergency surgery. WHEN YOU ADOPT AN ANIMAL - THE ANIMAL IS ALREADY STERILIZED OR THERE IS A CONTRACT STATING IT WILL BE PAID FOR AT A SPECIFIC AGE. (*Pet Insurance can also be purchased for rescued animals*)
-
Your pet doesn’t need to have a litter for your children to learn about the miracle of birth. Letting your pet produce offspring you have no intention of keeping is not a good lesson for your children — especially when so many unwanted animals end up in shelters. There are tons of books and videos available to teach your children about birth in a more responsible way.
-
There are some cases where an animal (for health reasons) cannot be fixed. In those cases, it is your responsibility to YOUR ANIMAL and OTHER PEOPLES ANIMALS to contain and keep your un-altered animal away from dog parks or daycares. They should be leashed and under control to prevent UNWANTED LITTERS. "Oops" is not an excuse that should be tolerated any longer.
-
Spaying and neutering helps fight pet overpopulation. Every year, millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.
