Mektub Shelter

"For the donkey who needs a stable. For the dog who is isolated and alone. For the kittens with no mum. Mektub is for them. Mektub is for Morocco."

Our Story

Mektub (formerly MAA) was founded by Fanny Belle and Lucy Austin following more than a decade of animal rescue work in Morocco.

For many years, our work focused on rescuing abandoned, injured and vulnerable animals from across the country, providing emergency veterinary care, rehabilitation and, whenever possible, finding them loving homes.

Following significant challenges in 2024, we made the difficult decision to close our doors to new admissions so that we could focus all of our resources on the hundreds of animals already depending on us.

Today, we continue to provide lifelong care for approximately 600 dogs, cats, horses and donkeys.

Almost every one of them came from neglect, abuse, abandonment or serious injury. Many have spent years rebuilding their confidence and learning to trust again.

Our primary focus today is giving these animals the opportunity they have waited so long for: a safe, loving forever home. Every successful adoption changes the life of one animal while allowing us to continue providing the care that the rest of our residents deserve.

"I first visited Mektub in 2025, and it changed me forever. The shelter was going through an incredibly difficult time after losing part of its home to a fire. There was not enough space, not enough helping hands, and heavy rains made everything even harder. Even so, every day the dogs greeted us with hope, happy for a full bowl of food and a little kindness. They reminded me that even the smallest act of love can make a difference.

I returned in 2026 with a team to help build new sections for the shelter. Seeing the progress we made together and meeting Winnie again, a dog who captured my heart from the very beginning, made me realize how much hope lives in this place.

Every dog at Mektub has a unique story. Many have experienced hardship that no animal should ever know, yet they still choose to trust, to love, and to give their whole heart to anyone who gives them a chance. They taught me far more than I could ever give them. I hope to keep coming back and offering my hands wherever they are needed, because every dog deserves the chance to find a family and a place to call home."
